Albury Women’s Shed
Project: Together We Can
Grant Round: 2024 Border Trust Community Grant Program
Supported by: Radio 2AY with Handbury Foundation
Funded Amount: $3,623.00
Impact Areas: Skills & Education | Women’s Empowerment | Community Connection | Financial Sustainability.
The Challenge
The Albury Women’s Shed is a welcoming, hands-on space where women learn woodworking skills, build friendships and grow in confidence.
As participation increased, outdated workshop machinery was limiting what members could safely create. The existing thicknesser — a key carpentry tool used to level and prepare timber — was no longer meeting safety and efficiency standards.
To continue providing a safe, empowering environment, the Shed needed reliable, industry-standard equipment.
The Solution
Through the 2024 Border Trust 2AY Grant Round, the Shed purchased a new industrial-standard thicknesser.
Installed in the shared Thurgoona workshop alongside the Thurgoona Men’s Shed, the machine replaced malfunctioning equipment and is now safely used by both groups.
Members receive training to build competency and confidence, and the machine supports personal builds, community projects and fundraising items.
The Impact
The upgrade delivered exactly what was needed — safer conditions, better quality work and stronger sustainability.
Women can now:
- Work with safe, reliable equipment
- Produce higher-quality woodworking projects
- Develop advanced practical skills
- Share knowledge and mentor others
- Create items for fundraising and community builds.
The ripple effect is powerful. Members gain confidence and independence while strengthening social connection and wellbeing.
As the Shed shared:
“Upgrading our equipment supports skill development, knowledge sharing, financial sustainability and women’s confidence and wellbeing.”
This is practical support creating lasting local impact.
