Precision, Creativity & Connection at Wodonga Men’s Shed

Wodonga Men’s Shed Inc
Project Name: CNC Software

Grant Round: 2025 Border Trust Community Grant
Supported By: ACE Radio 2AY with Handbury Foundation
Amount Funded: – $3,270
Project Reach: Members of the Wodonga Men’s Shed and wider community partners

As a recipient of a 2025 Border Trust Community Grant, funded by granting partner, ACE Radio 2AY in partnership with the Handbury Foundation, Wodonga Men’s Shed purchased specialised design and operating software that enable them to program their recently purchased CNC wood routing machine.

The software allows members to design complex templates which are then transferred directly to the CNC routing machine to produce precise woodwork pieces.

Members worked together to learn how the software functions, develop new designs and train others in operating the system.

The Shed now uses the technology to produce intricate timber items and signage, expanding the types of projects they can undertake both within the Shed and for the community.

Impact of local giving

The new software has transformed how the CNC machine is used within the Shed.

Members who had never previously worked with digital design tools are now learning how to create templates and operate the machine. This has opened the door to new skills, creative projects and collaborative learning.

The Shed can now produce more complex and precise pieces than was previously possible — something that has sparked curiosity from other Men’s Sheds and strengthened connections across the broader network.

Importantly, the project has also increased member engagement. Learning new technology together has provided fresh opportunities for members to collaborate, mentor one another and stay active in the workshop.
